Presentation for Parents by Northwestern University’s Center for Talent Development

Center for Talent Development – CTD at Northwestern University, www.ctd.northwestern.edu/, is an accredited learning center providing gifted education programs and resources for academically talented students PreK-12 throughout Illinois and Midwest.

 

Randee Blair, Susan Corwith, and George Peternel, Associate Directors at the Center for Talent Development, will present and answer parent questions on CTD programs including
-  Midwest Academic Talent Search (MATS): offers EXPLORE test for elementary school students, and SAT and ACT test for junior high students.  (Oswego308 junior high AT students who wish to take the SAT can take it through CTD as District 308 students will not be participating in the testing offered through the regional education center in Joliet this year.)

-  Saturday Enrichment Classes for pre-k to 9th grade held at North Central College in Naperville                             

-  Distance Online Learning courses for elementary through Advanced Placement courses                                      

-  Testing for preK - 3rd graders                                                                                                                                  

-  Summer Enrichment Program

* What is MATS, and what are the advantages of being involved in MATS?

* After MATS testing, parents receive recommendations on future course selections and educational needs; could you give us guidance on how to work with this information?

* How are CTD's Saturday Enrichment Classes taught: instructor qualifications, number of students, pace, and content?

* How many students participate in Distance Online learning, how is it taught, and how can I get my child started?

* What are ways that I can motivate my child to learn online?

* How can I get testing for my preK - 3rd grade child?

Randee Blair retired from Evanston School District 65 in 2005 as a Curriculum Coordinator in Gifted and Math.  She is also an author of several educational publications.
Susan Corwith recently earned her PhD in Educational Leadership with an emphasis on gifted programs. Prior to joining CTD she was the president of the Wisconsin Center for Academically Talented Youth in Madison, Wisconsin.
George Peternel retired from Golf School District 67 as a Principal.  Subsequently, he served as the Director of Head Start in Lake County and the Coordinator for Project Excite.

 

Door Prizes

A Parent Session with Dr. Bertie Kingore 

UNDERSTANDING YOUR GIFTED CHILD AT HOME AND AT SCHOOL

Gifted students have vast differences and needs that many people do not understand.  In this practical session parents are guided toward interpreting the pattern of abilities and strengths of their gifted child.  Suggestions are shared for nurturing talents at home.

 

Dr. Bertie Kingore is a national consultant who has worked with students, their teachers, and their parents for over 30 years.  Recognized for her humorous and practical presentations, her energetic sessions leave teachers revitalized and eager to implement her shared ideas and learning experiences in their own classrooms.  Dr. Kingore and her husband, Richard, are the parents of three gifted sons whose needs and talents fuel her dedication to gifted education.
